PROMISING Imola weekend ends early after opening-lap contact
The Imola Circuit hosted the third round of the Italian GT Endurance Championship from 4 to 6 September, with Vittorio Viglietti returning behind the wheel of the No. 22 Audi R8 LMS GT3 Evo II of Tresor Attempto Racing alongside Marco Cassarà and Sebastian Ogaard. Competing in the AM class, the trio showed strong potential throughout the weekend before their three-hour race came to an unfortunate and premature end.
Friday provided a positive start to the event. Although several red flags limited the amount of running available during the free practice sessions, the crew was still able to make good progress with the setup of the Audi. On a technical and demanding circuit such as Imola, the main focus was on finding the right compromise between performance and drivability while developing a setup capable of adapting to the different driving styles of all three drivers.
After completing the final Free Practice session on Saturday morning, attention turned to qualifying in the early afternoon. The session proved to be one of the strongest moments of the weekend, with the No. 22 crew finishing first in class within their qualifying group. Once the combined results were calculated, Viglietti, Cassarà and Ogaard secured an excellent P2 in the AM class and P14 overall in a field of more than 50 cars across the GT3 and GT Cup categories.
The result highlighted the quality of the work carried out throughout the practice sessions, with drivers, engineers and the entire Tresor Attempto Racing team successfully finding a competitive balance that suited the whole crew and put them in a strong position ahead of Sunday's three-hour race.
Unfortunately, the race itself lasted only a few corners. Cassarà was entrusted with the opening stint, but at the Villeneuve chicane, just the third corner of the race, the No. 22 Audi was hit by another competitor. The contact caused mechanical damage which initially appeared relatively minor, but ultimately proved sufficient to force the crew into retirement before they had the opportunity to show their potential.
It was certainly not the ending the team had hoped for after such a promising weekend. Nevertheless, the strong qualifying performance and the work carried out between the drivers, engineers and team remain important positives to take away from Imola. With the pace shown throughout the event, the potential to fight for the AM class victory was clearly there.
Viglietti will now turn his attention to the final round of the Italian GT Sprint Championship on 10–11 October, before returning to the Endurance series for the championship finale at Mugello at the end of October.
