Viglietti takes another GT3 class victory after remarkable comeback at Mugello
The Mugello Circuit hosted the third round of the Italian GT Sprint Championship from 24 to 26 July, where Vittorio Viglietti returned behind the wheel of the No. 22 Audi R8 LMS GT3 Evo II of Tresor Attempto Racing alongside Marco Cassarà. Despite a challenging start to the weekend, the crew delivered an impressive recovery to secure another class victory in Sunday's Race 2.
Friday was dedicated to the usual preparation work, with two free practice sessions focused on optimizing the setup and adapting the car to the demanding Tuscan circuit. Throughout the day, Viglietti and Cassarà worked closely with the team to improve the balance of the Audi and prepare for qualifying and the two sprint races.
Saturday proved particularly frustrating. During Viglietti's qualifying session, two separate red flags interrupted the running, preventing him from completing a representative lap and leaving the No. 22 Audi at the back of the grid for Race 1. Despite the difficult starting position, both drivers showed excellent race pace throughout the afternoon. Viglietti's opening stint featured an impressive recovery through the field, climbing as high as P3 in the AM class before handing the car over to Cassarà. However, the crew had to serve a 22-second success handicap during the mandatory pit stop following their victory at Vallelunga, dropping them out of podium contention. Even so, the pair fought back strongly to finish just outside the class podium in P4.
Sunday offered the opportunity for redemption. Starting once again from the back, Cassarà completed a solid opening stint that kept the team within striking distance before handing the Audi over to Viglietti. In the second half of the race, Viglietti delivered one of his strongest performances of the season, recovering more than ten positions overall and climbing to the lead of their class after several decisive overtakes. Managing the final laps under pressure, he brought the No. 22 Audi across the finish line to secure another class victory and complete an outstanding comeback.
The result capped off another highly competitive weekend for Viglietti and Cassarà, confirming the pace shown throughout the event despite the setbacks experienced in qualifying and the unavoidable success handicap in Race 1. It also marked the second class victory of the season for the pairing in the Italian GT Sprint Championship.
